Agreed, this should be an option in the hyphenation settings. It is required for conformation to many standard style guides.

Having the same issue.
It seems like the extra space appears in the text variable only when the variable is on the same page as the source text. For instance, I see an extra space corresponding to a soft return character in the chapter title in the running head on the first page of the chapter, but the space does not appear in the running head on subsequent pages.

More details: When the leading of the footnotes is the same as the baseline grid increment, blank lines appear between all footnotes. If the leading is smaller than the grid, some of the blank lines disappear. No matter how small I make the leading, there are still some blank lines, especially before the last footnote in a sequence of several. I have seen other discussion of this bug online but no resolution. Please make footnotes play nicely with the baseline grid. Thank you.
