It is a next-generation version of a widely-used typeface. Unfortunately 'rvrn' is not an option in this case.

The issue has been fixed in the latest release of InDesign – InDesign 2021. The fix was also available in the previous version of InDesign – version 15.1.2
Please update to either of these versions of InDesign to get the fix.—
Adobe InDesign teamAn error occurred while saving the comment Thomas Phinney commentedIt seems to have gotten worse, or something in latest builds of our font makes it worse.
IT NOW COMPLETELY LOCKS INDESIGN MAC (latest ID update of a couple weeks ago).UPDATE: not completely locked. But after I tried to move the weight slider, it took about 6-8 minutes for ID to update the screen the first time, after the spinning beach ball (on a new MacBook with 32 GB of RAM). Every time I try to do anything, including click in the text, anything at all, it is more spinning.
My entire document is one page, with one text box, with three words in it.

In our case, it is an open source font for Google, that is almost finished. It has four axes: weight, width, y opaque (contrast) and ***** (italic).

Hi,
This has been fixed with InDesign version 15.0.2
Please update to the latest version to check the fixThanks
An error occurred while saving the comment Thomas Phinney commentedI am experiencing this as well. It is a set of additional distortions and behaviors, on top of the basic ones that affect screen and print, that only occur on PDF export.

Adobe InDesign teamAn error occurred while saving the comment Thomas Phinney commentedI have a lovely three-axis (soon to be four-axis) variable font in development, which I would like to test in InDesign. Looking forward to the new functionality one of these days!

However, coding this with 'calt' instead of 'rclt' does work in InDesign at least (and probably other CoolType apps).
This is more of a hack, as these are usually not things one wants users to be able to turn off (potentially by accident). And of course fonttools does not support this so one would have to do it as a post-processing step. But it is definitely better than “doesn’t work at all in Adobe CoolType apps like InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.”
