[ID-4274243] InDesign clearing Undo stack frequently
Undo not working, InDesign 21.02x64
16.12.2025
As recently as yesterday, it was possible to perform more than 50 undo actions, but today only 1–2 steps are available, and my colleagues are experiencing the same issue.
Hi,
Thank you for reporting the issue. We have been able to reproduce the issue, and it is currently under investigation.
Analysis
- We have been able to reproduce the issue on Windows, and it is currently under investigation.
- The root cause is that the UNDO stack is getting purged and the issue is getting manifested in History Panel.
- The issue is intermittently(depends on when InDesign chooses to purge the stack) getting reproduced on Windows machine only. The issue is not observed on Macintosh.
- It has started to be reported by customer recently 14-Dec-2025 onwards. A Windows update has been pushed on 09 December 2025 for Win11 23H2, 24H2 and 25H2. Refer to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/december-9-2025-kb5071417-os-build-22631-6345-5b7b15d8-96a2-4c8f-a61d-b5e1bc9618f8

I have worked on InDesign for 20+ years. The CTRL Z function has always been limitless up to the last time you hit save. This "BUG" is seriously a problem.
Within the last year, another issue has popped up as well for both Windows and Mac's- a simple CTRL S (save) does not create a secure place to save all changes. At this time, I can hit save and still go backwards -kind of defeats the point of hitting save to save your changes so you can't undo them! It would be nice if this was fixed as well. SAVE should mean SAVE.-- not undo if you want. If I am editing a document, it is too easy to go backwards and undo the corrections. Again, kind of silly that save does not mean save.

I am also experiencing exactly the same issue on Windows 11.
Ctrl+Z now works only 1 or 2 times, and the Undo History is cleared randomly, removing steps that were previously recorded correctly. In some cases, the entire history disappears while working. This is critical, because using Ctrl+Z can revert the document to an unpredictable state, with no indication of how much of the history was preserved. This can result in the loss of many hours of work, especially on long and complex layout projects.
Until recently, it was possible to undo dozens of actions without any issues. This behavior is severely impacting the workflow.
Looking forward to a fix as soon as possible. Thank you for investigating. -

I have not received that Windows update (I'm not sure why, as it was probably supposed to be the December "Patch Tuesday", but that's beside the point), so that's not the cause of this bug (or the other bug that appeared at the same time, of text disappearing temporarily). I'm running Win11 23H2, and the last update I received was on Nov. 20 (KB5068865).

Same here! Actually, my InDesign is messing up the entire history. It saves some steps in the history and not others. Then, it deletes some steps or the entire history. So you can perform some actions and then everything disappears again. In short, a mess!

Since the latest update I cannot undo something in a document more than twice...its very frustrating.
1. Adobe InDesign 2026
2. Hit CTRL-Z more than twice
3. I used to be able to undo something at least 50 steps
4. Should be unlimited undos. -

since last update it is not possible to go more than one step back (STRG+Z) any more, also there is only the last step shown in the protocol palette. According to the Indesign help files there shall be 25.000 steps saved. Honestly, it sucks while trying different versions in an early state of layout.

The option to Undo is not working properly in the latest version. I cannot 'undo' more than three times, after which the option is not available (greyed out).
