GPU-Acceleration on Windows

It would be brilliant to have this as an option especially since more and more people are using high DPI/4K displays and the CPU is not capable of allowing for smooth zooming/scrolling/panning in most cases. It's working perfectly fine with Photoshop and rather good with Illustrator so I can't see why this shouldn't be possible with InDesign as well.
On my 4K Dell XPS 15 it's quite a pain to scroll through the document or zoom in and out, laggy as hell although this is a very poweful machine!

GPU Acceleration on Windows is available with the latest InDesign 2025(v20.4.0.052). Please update to the latest InDesign via the CCD app to get this feature.

The minimum system requirements for using GPU Acceleration on

  1. Windows are: Monitor with a display resolution greater than 2K
  2. GPU card with at least 1GB vRAM.

Note on GPU Acceleration: High-resolution monitors are becoming the standard. With the high monitor resolutions, it is getting difficult for the CPU to handle the rendering. This is where the GPU comes into play. Rendering on high-density displays is best handled by the GPU. GPU acceleration makes the rendering of the documents faster while zooming, scrolling, and panning. The enhanced performance from using the GPU in InDesign powers features like Animated Zoom, which make zoom actions smooth and animated.

Based on our internal tests, we found that GPU acceleration provides better performance when the monitor's display resolution is greater than 2K and the GPU has at least 1GB vRAM. Hence, these have been set as the minimum system requirements.

For any issue related to GPU Acceleration on Windows, please provide below information:

  • Display adapters in Device Manager (Ensure that the display cable is connected to the GPU port on machines with dual display ports for proper rendering)
  • Display settings (To access the GPU feature on Windows, the monitor should have a resolution above 2K.)
  • Share the IDSniffer file available at %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\Version 20.0\en_US\Caches\GPULog\IDSniffer

    It's insane that this is disabled for <2k monitors (like on normal-sized laptops). I have a Dell XPS 15 with a lovely Nvidia GPU and ID refuses to use it because the display is 80 pixels too small. Please enable for supported GPUs regardless of display size!

    [BUG v20.4.1 ???]

    I have a 4k monitor.
    I put indesign version 20.4 (GPU Performance Works!)
    I just updated to 20.4.1 (GPU Performance Does NOT Work Anymore!)
    What should I do?

    It's great that the feature is finally implemented, but a real bummer that it's only available on HiDPI monitors (2560x1440 and above). On full HD monitors (1920x1080) the feature is disabled.

    Nice to see it's been in the backlog for almost 4 years now. Y'all still got any people working on nuts & bolts issues like this that would improve InDesign significantly?

    Any progress report? Any roadmap for InDesign GPU acceleration implementation on non-Macintosh platforms?

    On my Surface Pro I pinch-to-zoom and it works great.

    Why can't I also do animated zoom on the desktop with keyboard and mouse like in Illustrator and Photoshop?

    @tenzin They only follow the logic of fashion, trend and profit. They have not understood that both ID and AI are very slow and often crash on trivial operations of ordinary administration,Filling them with new 3D functions, AI etc etc does nothing but weigh down systems that are now old and obsolete. I was taught that the house must be built on thick and solid foundations , here a wolf Ezekiel is enough to make everything collapse .... I had to remove the GPU acceleration in illustrator because it crashed every 2x3 ... Dedicated GPU acceleration should not be better?

    it's so ridiculous by now, i'm looking forward to visit this page every year just to see everyone again ... hi folks, nice to see you again - see you again next year!

    (oh and by the way: one requirement of indesign 2025 is a multicore CPU ... now let's all guess whether indesign 2025 uses more than one single core to expert a 200 page PDF file ... you know ... one page is an independent unit of information that can be calculated on its own. don't be fooled though ...)

    still no good news. 3 years after it got into backlog. and what anout multicore processing?

    The fact this still isn't an option is absurd and only a display of laziness and lack of care for the product. It's been in backlog for nearly THREE years. This type of performance feature is foundational to the type of work being done today.

    With Photoshop, Illustrator and a handful of other Adobe products using GPU acceleration, it makes it feel like the internal development structure of Adobe is incredibly siloed with zero collaboration which I find laughably ironic.

    Please stop adding underused features and get the foundation of this product figured out.

    Today I received a mock-up of a 276-page catalog of designer tiles to check and correct errors. I need to view about 2000 high resolution images in a scalable view in a program that has no GPU acceleration and only uses one CPU core... If Publisher adds scripting support before Adobe adds GPU support, I'll probably recommend it all your partners
