Ability to track large file sizes cause
It would be a useful feature to allow users to be able to track down what in their documents is causing their file sizes to be inflated. The feature would be an audit of what is in the document and how it is directly linked to the final file size of the document. This would really help in keeping bloat in the files down to minimum, or choose alternative ways to configure files.

Enlarge the size of the panels; so hard for the eyes with PAO after 40 years (Illustrator and Photoshop have this option in user/interface)
Home page (InDesign, Photoshop, etc.)
Please add keyboard ability to CLOSE the big honkin home pages. When I close a document and want to be in my Finder looking for the next thing, I have to mouse up and click on the red CLOSE button at upper left of the home screen to remove it from view. Yes, it's not a huge thing, but a Cmd-W there (the universal CLOSE command on the keyboard) would be much appreciated for workflow.

Eyedropper Tool and locked layers on top, theme tool
Hey, here is an idea; I have a layer with a photo and i have a layer with text on top. I lock the textlayer and select the eyedropper tool. I click on the photo and the colour is picked. Just like in illustrator...Wishfull thinking?
Here is another golden idea:
I have a photo of an interior, mostly brown- somewhat green and overal grey, but there is an amazing pop of yellow because there is one small flower on a painting.
I select the Colour Theme Tool, I zoom in on the flower, and click on it.

Create contingent or logical elements in Data Merge
Data Merge already allows omitting empty fields, but I will often have additional text or elements that are contingent on those fields. If would be great to be able to attach other elements to the merge fields logically so they are omitted if the merge field does not exist.
Also, any chance of fixing the <feff> problem? Huge thanks to David Blatner for the find/replace solution, but it would be great to have that resolved.

Uniform behaviour of Compound Paths in InDesign and Illustrator
Illustrator gives full control over Compound Paths.
Unfortunately, when copying those in Illustrator and Paste in InDesign,
the Compound paths often don't survive in the correct way. Please let InDesign behave the same way as Illustrator.

Option to remove empty frames in Data Merge
Empty image frames placed inline in a text field will throw off the alignment if the text field is centered. (This happens when you're going to have a row of, say, icons and different pages will have different numbers of icons)
It would be excellent to have an checkbox in the Options tab of the Data Merge dialog box to "Delete empty frames" upon merging.

Interactive Form Fields need to be fully editable (i.e. Color, paragraph styles, Sample Text)
When exporting an Interactive PDF from InDesign, we still need to be able to assign Colors and Paragraph Styles AND retain the FPO copy we have typeset in the Text box.
For example, in my attached screenshot, when I choose to export as an Interactive PDF, I need to see all of the copy within the box show up exactly as shown. I have it set up so that it still feels slightly designed (despite being a form) and worded so that the client can follow along and replace certain parts with specific language. Right now upon export, this copy…

Set default image editor
When editing a lot of placed images, we have to specify the right editor each time, over and over. InDesign has to generate a long list of possible editors (and other apps that are never uses to edit a photo, such as browsers). This takes time.
Please make a preference to set the default editor - and a keyboard shortcut to load the selected image in that editor.I know, we can tell the OS to open all images with e.g. Photoshop, but that is not a real solution, since it breaks some other workflows.
Just give the possibility to…

When deleting a layer, I offer to make it possible to replace the removed layer with another one of your choice
When deleting a layer, I offer to make it possible to replace the removed layer with another one of your choice.
As, for example, this is done when removing a color from the color palette.3 votes -
Allow special characters to be added in front of note number when importing footnotes (e.g., tabs).
The "prefix" option for "document footnote options" should allow that, but only permits the few options in the pulldown menu. We should be able to insert any character before or after the footnote text.

Interactive text field options that do not exist in InDesign, but do in Acrobat.
I make a ton of interactive PDFs in InDesign. Why can I not set things like character limits or centered text within InDesign so I can save the settings in the .indd file? Instead, I am forced to make these changes in Acrobat. This means that any changes to the .indd file require that I remake the PDF format changes in Acrobat. EVERY TIME!

Deprecated GPU renderer
I found out today that indesign uses the OpenGL engine on Mac Mojave, despite the fact that Apple no longer supports the technology. Why? Can you fix it to improve Indesign GPU performance, and use it for raster more faster previews, effects like shadows and exports?

Share for review—interactive documents
Loving the new Share for Review feature, but how about the ability to markup documents with interactivity. Currently, all the buttons, rollovers, etc. disappear when using this feature—which implies it's just a baked-in version of adobe DC's commenting feature for static PDF documents.

Actions! Photoshop has had that for 20 years or so -- and it saves tons of time. In ID, I have to endlessly repeat these manual maneuvers.
This is a non-brainer feature idea, and has been that for 20 years. Actions!

Spinning Beachball Details
When we get the dreaded spinning beachball (and Window equivalent), which seems to happen more and more with each new InDesign version, can we get some sort of real-time detailed report?
It'd be helpful to know what's going on in the moment so we can take action if necessary. As it is, we have no idea if InDesign is functioning properly or not, if there's a memory shortage, if there's a font conflict, and on and on.
It seems that the app must "know" what's wrong, to generate the spinning beachball -- so why leave users in the dark? We're…

Ignore Fit to frame options when replacing images whilst maintaining size
When I have the option "Preserve Image Dimensions When Relinking" selected, I would like it to override any Auto Fit to Frame options.
Right now I'm working on a catalogue that has several thousand pictures and all the frames are set to Auto Fit to Frame. When I relink the images (with the high resolution files) they all change size.
