Shading for character styles
I love using the shading for whole paragraph styles, but it would be nice to have shading for character styles as well. This would be nice for "highlighter" effects, which you just want to highlight a few lines or words. Just like applying an underline or strikethrough, but with a little more control over color, padding, maybe even shape?

Really would be nice to have this feature.
A workaround I've been using: Create a shape the size of your shading and anchor it to the text. Unfortunately this method is very time consuming and not systematic.

Most of the time when I go to use this I forget it's paragraph and not character. For me it would be useful to use like Word's highlighter feature. I was going to use it today essentially like a character style to break up a feature list, blocking out some words but no, it applies it to the whole line :(

This would be great.
There is a workaround by using the underline-option and tweaking the weight, offset, and color values, etc.
BUTfor example, if I then want to underline a "shaded" word (like if theres a hyperlink shaded) then I can't do it with the workaround any more.I also would love if it was possible to extend the shading at the start/ end of the word (like another user already said)

I agree, it would be nice to be able to extend the shading beyond the start/end of the word to ot is not cropped to tighly! Would love it!

Yes, to a certain degree it is possible, but it is limited in its control. For example, you can't pad the ends of the underline so that it works more like the shading offset. The underline only goes to the exact end of the letters.

This is already possible by using the underline option in a character style and tweaking the weight, offset, and color values.
