Smart version detection: open .indd files with the InDesign version that created them (or the newest installed version)
When multiple InDesign versions are installed side by side (e.g., InDesign 2024 and 2026), double-clicking a .indd file always launches whichever version the OS has registered as the default app. This frequently causes version mismatches triggering the "convert file?" dialog, even though the correct version is installed and running on the same machine.
Proposed feature: When a .indd file is opened with a version older than the one that created it, and a suitable newer version is installed locally, InDesign should automatically hand the file off to that version instead of showing the conversion warning.
Optionally, offer a preference:
Always open with the version that created the file (if installed),
Always open with the newest installed version,
Keep current behavior (ask every time).
Since InDesign already reads the internal version number of the document, the installed versions could be checked before opening and the file routed accordingly. This would eliminate a very common source of accidental conversions and broken backward compatibility in mixed-version workflows.
