1. InDesign Server + Catalina = heavy permission problems

   --- Update: PROBLEM SOLVED. See comment below ---

   We have run into to serious problems with running InDesign Server (IDS) on Mac OS 10.5.x Catalina: The problems are somehow related to file permissions and will only show when the IDS instances are started by launch agents (or launch deamons).

   This problem manifests itself in several ways we have encountered – using IDS CC 2020 as well as IDS 2019:

   1. Documents can only be opened from a limited number of locations – actually only one location as far as we know, the /private/tmp/ directory on the local machine. When one of our scripts (applescripts) tells IDS to open a file stored in any other location that we have tried – like the desktop or on a network volume connected to with smb or afp – IDS always trow back error number 29445, stating that the file is opened by another user or in another program (which its not).

   Copying or moving the document file manually to the /tmp folder makes the document openable without any error message. This might suggest a possible workaround – but no: the files cannot be copied or moved either by the scripts themselves:

   1. Any command to do something with files, other than files in the /tmp-folder, results in error ”Operation not permitted” when run from a script executed from IDS started with launch agents. Finder commands or shell script commands like cp, mv and touch all fails. So it’s not even possible to copy a document to the /tmp directory from the script before opening it.

   2. Trying to place an EPS-file in a document from a script in the ”forbidden” locations results in the same error message as mentioned first above: 29445. This does not happen with pdf:s, jpg:s or png:s. This is a smaller problem than the other two above, since it can be worked around by converting the eps-files to pdf.s in another process.

   But problem 1+2 is a showstopper.

   All these problems (probably having a common cause) are totally non-existent under other circumstances:
   • IDS is started with launch agents in systems older than 0.5.x Catalina – no problem.
   • IDS is started from Terminal with Catalina – no problem.
   • Indesign CC (client version) is used, under any Mac OS.
   There is no difference with IDS CC 2020 compared to IDS CC 2019 in this respect.

   The problems could be related to the new security measures introduced with Catalina, where access to network volumes and some local directories (like the desktop) are more heavily controlled than in previous systems, demanding the user to actively allow access to such locations. But with IDS, when started by agents or deamons, those dialogs never show up – only the error messages. And it’s not possible (as far as we know by all the ways we have tried) to allow such access for IDS.

   Another security measure, introduced with Mac OS 10.14 – the limitation for scripts to automate other applications without user consentis – is possible to handle under Catalina: A startup script (telling osascript to tell applications to do something) can force the desired dialogs in wich the user can allow InDesign Server to send Apple Events to those applications – once and for all. That’s fine.

   But using a startup script to force the corresponding dialogs for directory access will not work with IDS when started from launch agents. Whatever method we have tried, there is always the same the error message: Operation not permitted.

   Dragging launchd to the Full Disk Access panel doesn’t help either

   However, when IDS is started from Terminal, the same startup script gives us the desired result: The user is asked to give application Terminal access to the network filesystem – which we then can give it, once and for all.

   Starting IDS from Terminal is not a plausible solution in real production though, at least for stability reasons.

   So the question is: Why can IDS not be given access to file directories when started by launch agents? Why won’t the necessary questions show up?

   I guess the cause of the problems relies somewhere inbetween Apple and Adobe. The combination of launch agents and InDesign Server does not work in combination with the new Catalina security measures. Adobe certainly has responsibility, at least partly, since there is no announcement that running IDS by launch agents under MacOS Catalina will not work.

   We hav invested in machines that canon ot run systems older than Mac OS Catalina, so our scripts must work in that environment.

   Anyway, the most important question for us right now is: What can we do in the current situation? Is there a workaround?

When I update links in my prepress documents the scale down to 91% and that´s really frustrating that I can´t just mark them and use a short key to resize them to 100%. 7. Scripted iterative document open/close fails to close files

   Note: my sample code is jsx, but the problem may not be limited to jsx.

   We have multiple products that sometimes show a problem with document.close() not actually closing the file, leading to incorrect functioning, memory bloat, slowdowns, and we believe some crashes. I provide a test script that takes a currently open document and iteratively copies it, opens the copy, then closes the copy -- after the loop is finished, the copy files are removed.

   Important: If run from the ESTK or Scripts Panel, the script works as expected -- no problems. If run from a custom menu (setup script also provided), the problem happens every time.

   We believe we've seen this in cases where a custom menu is not the launch mechanism, and may be intermittent in those cases.

   We believe we've seen this in InDesign Server as well. My scripts have been tested in CC 2019 and CC 2020 and on both Win and Mac.

   In order to run the "Test_menu.jsx" script for using a custom menu, the "Documents left open on close.jsx" script must be in a "TestScripts" folder in your 'home' or 'user' folder (i.e., inside of "~/TestScripts").

   This problem is a real headache and is difficult to work around. It affects multiple product areas; we urge prompt attention to this problem.

8. Enable XML export in Word file format so tagging and attributes are preserved.

   InDesign cannot currently export an XML structured file in Word file format, either because Word does not recognize the tags and attributes or because those elements are not within the document content. Please make an export possible so that XML structured content can be exported in Word file format and then reimported into InDesign.

   i have try to load master page by script (i post a small script test) but indesign crash... if i want copy masterspread from doc1 to doc 2 i must use "duplicate"...

10. Make ImageCatalog Script an integral contact sheet function in InDesign

    Good morning. There is a sample script in InDesign that I LOVE! It makes contact sheets much quicker (and using far less memory) than Photoshop or Bridge. If you have a hundred images and want to make a contact page, this script is the way to go. Much more efficient. The Script is the ImageCatalog under JavaScript samples in the Scripts window. This has always been available, and always worked very well until the last couple of updates. Now when I run it, it just sits there. If I try saving the images again (save a copy) or saving them as a different format (jpeg vs tiff or tiff vs jpeg), sometimes it works. Again - I LOVE this script, and wish you would just make it a regular feature. Is there something I should be doing with my images before I run the script?

    These are sample scripts that ship with InDesign. They show up under Windows / Utilities / Scripts / Samples / JavaScript / ImageCatalog.jsx. There is no vendor to contact other than Adobe for this one. There is another version of this under Windows / Utilities / Scripts / Samples / AppleScript / ImageCatalog.jsx, but I've never been able to get the AppleScript version to work.

    if I set value for snippetImportUsesOriginalLocation of documentPreferences to true, InDesign will place a snippet file with spread.place( snippetFile ) always at the current zero point [0,0].

    Wheras I set the value to false the snippet will be placed at its original position.

    It should be exactly the other way.

    Currently value false will use the original position and value true will chose the current zero point as defined with app.documents[0].zeroPoint .

    Tested with German InDesign versions:
    CS6 8.1.0
    CC 2014 10.2.
    2020 v. 15.0.1.209
    All on WIndows 10.

    3. Connect ExtendScript CC to ID CC 2019
    4. Run the script
    5. Observe that the script gives an error on line 6 (Invalid object for this request.) This is because TextFrame281 and TextFrame284 are the same object. They should be different objects.

    To see this more clearly:

    1. Load script.txt into ExtendScript CC
    2. Open ID CC 2019
    3. Connect ExtendScript CC to ID CC 2019
    4. Uncomment line 4 (var temp = TextFrame_281.id)
    5. Run the script
    6. The script runs fine. If you look in the document that has been created, the two text frames are in the upper right corner and they are linked to each other.

    In other words, the value of TextFrame_281 changes, depending on whether it is accessed. My only guess is that this is some kind of lazy evaluation gone wrong.

    2. Open ID CC 2019
    3. Connect ExtendScript CC to ID CC 2019
    4. Run the script

16. Where to find InDesign document links API reference?

    Where do I find the API reference for document links? (As show in the Links tab.) I've found scripting guides and various bits of documentation, but I can't find a complete object model reference.

    Newcomer to InDesign scripting. All I need is to dump the full path of every linked image to a text file. I've found a script online which does this, but it only outputs each link's 'name'. A fuller version of the same script dumps out the size and file type as well.

    I'd like to modify this script to dump out 'path', but 'path' doesn't seem to be the property name, and I can't figure out where to find the list of property names. Am I missing something? Does this documentation exist?

18. Preferences folder access via ExtendScript with macOS Catalina public beta 3

    I've installed macOS X Catalina public beta 3 and I have an annoying issue with scripting.
    I can't access to the user's preferences folder via Javascript even if I've assigned to InDesign full file system access in the security panel of the system preferences.
    I can't read any files inside the user's Library so that I can't load a GREP query for example.

    Hope you find a fix on this.

20. ExtendScript feature: asynchronous PDF export for indb books

    I'd like to see an asynchronous export option for indb books as it exists for indd documents because why not.
    Currently I work with 10 indb projects and I'd like to export them by 4 using all the power of my 4-core cpu, but I can only export them one by one due to lack of asynchronous export option.
    At the same time I'm able to export 4 indd files using existing asynchronousExportFile() method.
