To identify the cause of this issue, we had started our investigation with the aim to resolve it. You might have also received an email from us seeking more details to help in our investigation.

We’ve concluded our investigation and came up with the finding: Either the issue is fixed in the latest release of InDesign or the issue was intermittent in nature at the time of its reporting and is not reproducible now.

We recommend you to upgrade to the latest version of InDesign 2020.1.2(v15.1.2.226) as it is more robust and contains a lot of bug fixes.

We seek your support in our continual effort to improve InDesign.

InDesign 2020 15.0.1: The problem is still there. It depends on the number of individual chapter files - currently 156. If I combine individual chapters and thereby reduce the total number of chapters, I can create the index.
As a programmer, I say: Apparently a buffer / variable somewhere is too small.

    I have the same problem:

    Indesign CC 2019 14.0.3 and Indesign CC 2020 15.0:
Crash when generating the index in a book with many chapters.
The book has 156 chapters (from 1 page to 30 pages) - when updating the index reproducible crash.
    The book has 822 pages.

Combining individual chapters into a collective chapter solves the problem. We have summarized 28 chapters in 3 collective chapters. The book now has 128 documents and still 822 pages, and Indesign 2019 14.0.3 can now generate the index. From the programming point of view: There is a buffer too small.
