Hi all,
Thanks for the detailed feedback on this thread. Reopening it, because we're still actively working on the issue. A few updates:
Relinking: the case where manually entered alt text was overwritten by generated alt text on relink was fixed in 21.4. If you're still seeing manual alt text get overwritten after relinking, reply here with a sample file and your InDesign version and we'll investigate directly.
Remove all generated alt text: an option to remove all generated alt text from a document in a single action is on the way.
We hear the wider feedback here too, and we're keeping this open while we work through it.
Best regards,
Sunny

First of all: Thank you for your efforts to promote accessibility, Adobe!
But I totally agree to Eugene's statement: It should NOT be "on by default".
And there's also the financial aspect of it: Every automatically generated alt text costs a credit.
The user should always be asked in advance to agree to this.An error occurred while saving the comment

Thanks for this great example how to not communicate with the community, especially with power users who are wholehearted fans of the software.
Even the category »Resolved for user« is a punch in the face.

Irony won't help the InDesign developers to make the right decision.
To me it sounds like either all AT tools have to change their behavior or one tool (InDesign).
From a global perspective I'd say it's better to do such change only in one software.

Of course there are (always) bigger problems within InDesign. But nevertheless even the small ones should be reported.
Standards are a good thing, and InDesign should follow the recommendation of the people who run the PDF standard.

Please always ask a German speaking human (!) who is even an InDesign pro before adding new features which need translations.

The fix of the issue is now available in the latest InDesign 2026(v21.0.1.006). We recommend you upgrade to the latest version for the fix.
If you are unable to see the update, go to the Creative Cloud application, click on the context menu on the top right, and click on Check for App Updates.

I noticed some weird behavior if there's a white-colored text logo on a colored background: The tool generates totally silly alt-text.
For example this one: »Eine Person in einem weißen Hemd sitzt an einem Tisch und hält eine Tasse Kaffee, während sie auf ein geöffnetes Laptop-Bildschirm schaut.«
which would be in English:
"A person wearing a white shirt is sitting at a table, holding a cup of coffee while looking at an open laptop screen."
I tried this with two different logotypes.
