    If you create an alias of a folder (located on a server) and drag it to the desktop, it works. For quick creation of aliases this way, press Option-Command while you drag the original item to the desktop.
    Note : Accessing items of an folder’s alias located on a server has not worked in previous releases of InDesign too.

    As far as I could test, it is not only problem of Indesign but also with the Operating System, the same Indesign Version CC2015 on 10.11-10.12 placing a document from a server through an alias folder also on the server works, but in OS 10.14 it quit working. The solution with copying the alias to the desktop seems to work, but it needs further clicks to a streamlined workflow.
