An error occurred while saving the comment Instead of just adding the options for right-to-left text to the interface in all InDesign versions, it seems it is only in the special Middle Eastern versions of the program. Support for right-to-left reading direction in regular InDesign is clearly there under the hood as you can get it by inserting arabic placeholder-text and making a style from that (then the style contains the setting, even though you have no UI option to toggle it).
That is not good. It should be added in all versions. I don't understand why it's removed?
We have designers that occasionally get arabic versions of documents, and having to install multiple versions of InDesign just for this is ridiculous. Software from other manufacturers, even freaking Word, supports this.

Thank you for reporting the issue to us.
We have been able to improve the performance with span columns but it is till work in progress.Please upgrade your InDesign application to the latest version to try out the incremental fix.

I have 16 pages (1 flow with 1 text box per page), 2-column left-aligned text, some titles and footnotes are spanned. It is quite slow to edit, even on a fast computer.
BUT turning on "balance columns" makes it an order of magnitude slower. It seriously freezes for 2 seconds if I ask it to change the *color* of a single letter (nothing should even need to reflow). I have to turn this off while editing, then turn it back on and check everything after I'm done. This is very annoying and time-consuming.
I don't know what it was like before CC2020, but if this is the performance *after* it has been improved then I'm not impressed. Perhaps they should talk to the FrameMaker team. There I can have hundreds of pages of balanced columns and spanned titles and it doesn't even blink when making large changes that would cause all the text to reflow...

Adobe InDesign teamAn error occurred while saving the comment I have a text flow of only 16 pages. CC2020.
Two columns (left-aligned), footnotes and some titles span columns. No grep styles. It is very slow, but manageable. I'm on an Intel Xeon E-2176M @ 2,7 GHz, with a fast M2 disk and 32 GB of RAM, so you'd think a few pages of text would not be a problem.
If I additionally turn on "balance columns" it becomes so excruciatingly slow at updating that it's impossible to edit the text/formatting normally. The smallest edit, like changing the color of a single character (that shouldn't really cause anything to reflow) takes a 1-2 seconds to update.
I have to turn off "balance columns" to be able to edit somewhat normally, then turn it back on later to see result. This is silly. It's not that complex.
On the other hand, in Adobe Framemaker I have text flows that are hundreds of pages long, full-justified text, hundreds of footnotes, and balance columns. It doesn't even blink even when I do edits that cause all pages to reflow.
It is ridiculous. They should enable the same typographic options in all language versions of InDesign.
To have different options depending on what language you install is stupid. Now we need to have multiple copies of InDesign installed for working with different language documents.
