My particular version of this issue (comment from October 19, 2018) seems to have been resolved since posting. For me, it was the selecting from the font menu and hitting Return that did not work, but I tested it this morning and it seems to work — currently on macOS Mojave with the 14.0.2 Indesign release.

In previous versions of InDesign, I could select text, click into the Character Panel, and begin typing the font name. Eventually, after I had typed in enough of the font name, I could hit "Return" and it would choose the top suggestion and change the text accordingly (without using my mouse to select the font name).

However, if there is only one font left as the suggested font option, this does not work in the latest version of InDesign. (So, rather than hitting "Return", I have to go back to my mouse and click on the font name.)

It does seem to work if there are multiple suggestion options.
