The issue has been fixed in the latest release of InDesign – InDesign 2021. The fix was also available in the previous version of InDesign – version 15.1.2
Please update to either of these versions of InDesign to get the fix.

Unfortunately this is still not working (inc. Version 15.0.3).

This getting a bit annoying since various users are reporting this since months.
This bug is not a minor issue since it relay diminishing the functionality of variable fonts.
It is a new technology but with this poor implementation designer will not start to use it.

We found that the only way to use a Variable Font in InDesign is:
    - when no instances are defined in the font (meaning no pre-set font-weights)
    - and there can only be slant, italic and weight axis as a axis name (optical size for example can not be used)

I would be grateful if you can fix this, so Variable Fonts work as great as in Illustrator or Photoshop.

    thank you,
    Api Shranten
