    The preview problem sounds like you're converting the document from one Indesign version to a previous version (or opening the idml) and the document can't find the links.
    It's recommended to use the same version of Indesign that the document was created in - then, even if the links are missing, the preview will still show.

    I can multiply the image over a background colour using the effects, but I can't use the attributes panel as the overprint fill is greyed out.
    Can you explain how to use the attributes panel to overprint an image?
