I strongly agree with you, this feature is really needed.
In the meanwhile I use a small trick to update the pg nb only without affecting the changes in my toc headings.
My way is to create a hidden layer for every heading, with the needed changes in text.
of course all other steps to create a toc will be the same (such as paragraph and character styles and.. to stylize my toc).
Then my toc entries will be those hidden layers of my updated headings, and I click that option in toc creating panel (include text on hidden layers) . Any changes needed later will be in those hidden layers, and after that all I needed is to update my toc, so only pg nb and any other changes in the hidden layers will be updated without affecting the style and text content in the toc.
If there is another simplest way, I will appreciate your suggestion.
