   This issue got fixed in macOS Monterey 12.1 and upgrading to this OS (or later) will help overcome this issue.

   HAH!

   Was hoping this was fixed with upgrade to Big Sur 11.3.1, but now ID 16.2.1, AI 25.2.3 and PS 22.4.1 all highlight the extension when doing a save as.

   Bugger, such an annoying time kill.
