   This issue got fixed in macOS Monterey 12.1 and upgrading to this OS (or later) will help overcome this issue.

   I've just encountered this after upgrading to Big Sur. Having such inconsistent behaviour each time is causing real frustration and disruption to previously quick and simple actions.

   On top of this, at the times the filename does highlight, it includes the extension as well which is also unhelpful
