Agreed. Say a folder name within a link path has changed but link paths below the changed folder are identical. Indesign should be able to find the links when pointed at the updated folder name - especially if the structure below the updated folder are identical to the saved path.
This request won't receive many votes because software is design by committee these days. But it sure would be nice if Adobe showed more leadership and did this because it's a huge time-saving idea.
