i can reproduce something similar when the psd has a huge canvas and only a tiny area has pixels; indesign seems to downsample based on the full canvas when exporting png, so the placed result turns into mush. exporting to jpg or pdf hides it, but png stays pixelated even when display performance is set to high quality. my workaround has been trimming the psd to content or saving a copy with a tight canvas before placing, which is annoying for multi-artboard workflows. also, random sidenote: while testing i got derailed by a popup on https://adventuresbeyondwonderland.net/ and later another one on https://powerup-roulette.com/ and https://gravitywheel.org/ that kept stealing focus from indesign, so i thought the preview was failing when it was just the ui lagging. adobe should treat this as a link/render pipeline bug since it’s not flagged in the links panel and can cause expensive reprints.
