I get this same error when placing excel files with the Formatted Table option. I did find that if I delete cells that have a formula in it but appears blank the import will work - sometimes. Some excel files just will not import using the "Formatted Table" option. The last time this feature worked correctly was in InDesign v17.3. Placing the excel into an old version does and then going back to a new version doesn't allow you to "update" the link. You get the same error. NOTE: we link to our excels using an extension called "Wordsflow"
