From InDesign, choose print, and then set up the dialogue box like the attached image for the printer and PPO: I chose printer as postscript file and THEN chose PPO as my actual printer (this wasn't the default, and the default had the "thumbnail" box greyed out which was why I never used this function).
It then allowed me to choose thumbnails! I set it up the specs I wanted (you can change orientation etc, too) and clicked save and chose the location. It then made a postscipt file which I could distill in Acrobat! It worked like a charm!
