I found a video on YouTube explaining how to get two pages to appear side by side. Using the drop-down menu within the pages panel, the "allow document pages to shuffle" option has to be checked, and then you can drag the second page thumbnail against the right edge of the page one thumbnail to get a side by side view. If facing pages has been checked for the document and you want a side by side page view, the "allow selected spread" option must be checked within the menu of the pages panel, and then you can drag the page two thumbnail against the right edge of the page one thumbnail.
