    I think I may have gotten this issue to clear up.

    Under preferences>file handling - Saving Indesign Files
    Number of Recent items to Display - Set this value to 0 then low enough to do 1 row of thumbnails
    [x] Always Save Preview Images with Documents
    Pages: First Page
    Preview Size: Small

    This seemed to help until I opened too many. Then on the InDesign home screen to the right of recent I tried clicking the list icon then click the thumbnail icon and it seems like they don't overlap anymore.

    If anything clicking one icon then the other will reset what's going on.
