  1. Paragraph Style Panel Overrides

THIS HAS BEEN BROKEN FOR YEARS NOW!

    Paragraph Overrides

You used to be able to hover your mouse over a paragraph style in the paragraph style panel that had an override (plus sign). When you hovered over this style it would display a tool tip showing you what was overriding that style. This no longer works.

InDesign magazine has even written an article about it... https://indesignsecrets.com/how-to-get-tooltips-working-again.php

The only way to fix this problem is to resize the panel. Every time you need to see what is overriding a style you have to resize the panel meaning you may have to…

  2. Nested Line Styles interfere with Grep Styles

I'm experiencing a bug where Nested Line Styles are interfering with Grep Styles.

    To reproduce:
    1. Create a Character Style "Small Caps" that only applies OpenType All Small Caps.
    2. Create a Character Style "No Break" that only applies the No Break rule.
    3. Create a Paragraph Style "Test":
        a. In Nested Styles, add Small Caps for 1 line
        b. In Grep Styles, add:
            i. Small Caps: ([\u\d&@#\$%/]{2,}(?!\l{2,}))|([\d&@#$%]+)|(I'D)
            ii. No Break: (?<=.{55}).{15}$
    4. Fill with placeholder text, and add a string of capital letters (something that matched the Small Caps grep) somewhere in the middle

    You'll notice that the line…

  3. Sentence case in styles

Please add a "Sentence Case" to Paragraph Styles. Incredibly the choices are limited to Normal, Small Caps, All Caps, OpenType All Small Caps. When editing a book the subheads are almost always Sentence Case. Why would this not be an option?

  4. character styles in Table of Contents

Not sure if this is a bug or a feature.

It is a best practice, if you use running headers, to apply a character style to a selected subset of a heading, for example, HeadText1 for a first-level heading, and HeadText2 for a second-level heading, so that the header just shows basically a short title for the heading. You define the header to contain two text variables, first Heading1 that picks up, for example, the first instance of the text marked with HeadText1, and Heading2 that picks up the last instance of HeadText2. Works great, and I have a post…

  5. ICML export doesn't preserve the paragraph styles of endnotes.

    1. Adobe InDesign 14.0.2
    2. Export a story containing endnotes as ICML
    3. Endnotes should be styled properly
    4. Endnotes lose the applied paragraph style
    5. UserVoice will not allow me to attach an IDML or INDD file. I can email it if needed.

What this means is that anyone using InCopy will lose the paragraph styling of their endnotes.

  10. Spanning columns sometimes makes my text move to the next page

I'm trying to span some text and every time I do that text jumps to the next page. I have the keep options to anywhere so it's not a style sheet issue. This seems to be a new bug related to CC2019. Since I am using footnotes and it's going to be accessible I can't fake it and add another text box.

  11. InDesign leading changes not applying

Whenever I change the leading (line spacing) under Character styles, the document won't accept the changes. I tried saving, quitting the program, and reopening, but the problem persists. Doesn't matter whether I apply the style to a single line or multiple lines.

  12. Italics not showing in InDesign CC2019 - but does in all other versions

I have a .docx file that when brought into InDesign CC2019 (14.0.2) the italics do not show. The italics show in all other versions of InDesign. This is worrying for when we work on long documents. The error still occurs if the file is changed to a .doc file.

  13. Unequal inset values in an Object Style don't display in a text frame if corners are rounded

If you use an object style with unequal inset spacing and apply it to a text frame, the unequal spacing is ignore and made uniform.

    Steps to recreate:
    1. Create an Object Style
    2. Go to 'Text Frame General Options' for that style
    3. Set unequal values for 'Inset Spacing'
    4. Go to 'Stroke & Corner Cptions'
    5. In 'Corner Options' set 'Rounded'
    6. Create a Text Frame
    7. Fill Text Frame with placeholder text
    8. Apply Object Style to Text Frame

Result: unequal inset spacing is ignored.

If you apply unequal inset spacing manually there are no problems —…

  14. Paragraph style naming field typed text overwrites itself

    1. Double click style name
    2. Attempt to rename style
    3. Text field appears limited to 1-3 characters.
    4. As text is entered into the field, each character deletes and replaces the previous (ie overtype mode).

This occurs only randomly and only inside of InDesign. My keyboard or OS settings can be ruled out as a cause.

  15. Paragraph style overrides key quick not working

When I select a paragraph and want to keep the character styles, but override the paragraph levels styles while holding down Ctrl/Shift click, this quick key does not work. Nothing happens. It used to work for CC2017. Ctrl click works for overriding character styles though. This is a nuisance, especially when it worked before

To remove paragraph-level overrides, but preserve character-level overrides and character styles, in the Paragraph Styles panel, hold down Shift+Ctrl and click on the Clear Overrides button at the bottom of the panel.
To remove character-level overrides, but preserve paragraph formatting overrides, hold down Ctrl as you click on the Clear Overrides button at the bottom of the Paragraph Styles panel.

  16. New, based-on Object style isn't "based on"

Take an Object Style and create a new style based on that style. When the new dialog opens with the based-on name present, it has a number of items chosen and selected, but it's not the same as the based on item.

You could try Duplicate Object Style and then add the based on-name, but while there is no error, any change made to the based-on object does not change the new object style.

  17. numbered list

When a long numbered list extends to the next page, the first list on the next page will indent outside of the margins. To correct, I just reapply the style. It happens after closing and opening the document several times without me even working on that page. I'm having to check the exported PDF every time when I do an update to the file.

  18. Bug - Paragraph style folder starts acting as paragraph style

Paragraph style folder starts acting as paragraph style. Individual styles inside the folder are no longer associated with paragraphs, just the folder. When changing name of folder the paragraph style settings are shown instead of the plain change folder name dialog.

  19. Size and Position Missing from Object Styles

"Size and Position Options" are missing from Object Styles. The option is simply not listed in the Object Styles options and I cannot find a reason for it anywhere. Everywhere I've searched says it should be there so that I can set a specific placement for an object with that style applied, but it's missing.

I'm using the software at work. It's Adobe InDesign CC - 2017.1 release. 12.1.0.56 x64 build.

  20. Add a tick box to settings panel of paragraph rules, to make rule under every line of a paragraph possible

I design a lot of school books. I frequently need to use dotted rules under all lines in a paragraph, where children can write down their own answers. These answers are already filled in with the correct answers for the teachers in a spot color. The students gets books without this spot color printed. This to clarify why I would need this. Until now the only solution I could find was to end each line with a paragraph end. But this is not very user friendly, especially when this answer-text needs a revision
