  1. Image Borders for Selected Edges

    1. Make it possible to select the edges a graphic or image receives a border.
    2. This matters because it can be nice to e.g. only give a top and bottom border to an image when it's layouted in a column in order to separate it more from the typography. Without the feature you have to create line objects, keep them properly spaced manually etc. which is tedious

An example would be how you can choose borders for cells in Apple's Numbers

  2. Insert (or delete) a character in "GREP Styles"

    Be able to insert/delete a character in Paragraph Style Options> Grep Styles: e.g. whenever this occurs: "^Day \d+$", add this ":" or "(^Day \d+)$" > "$1:"

  4. Set leading as a pecentage of the type's point size.

I wish you could set the Leading as a percentage instead of a point size, so if the point size changes the leading stays in proportion. And this percentage should stay persistent, once I enter a percentage is should stay that percentage and not revert to the point size of what that leading is. I know you can modify the Auto percentage in Preferences, but I want to be able to it on an instance by instance or stylesheet by stylesheet basis. This should be doable any place the leading can be changed.

  5. Add Index panel to InCopy

It seems to me to be a great oversight that the Index panel of InDesign does not exist within InCopy. To create an index is a natural part of content creation (although the actual generation of an index is naturally part of design).

Given that the anchors for index entries are in-line with the text as found in both the story editor and galley view, it seems that there should be a way to work with these within InCopy.

  6. Transform multiple objects at once with their own reference point

If you select multiple objects they are now treated as one big object and transformed using a reference point from that one big object.
I really need a checkbox where you can choose for every individual object to keep their own reference points when transforming multiple objects. This will save a lot of time. I know their is a workaround (transform again), but that's more steps and it seems like such a logical feature to have.

  7. Adjust book cover spine

Please give us back the former option of layout adjustment (see screen capture) !!
It was so simple and so easy to change page format and objects adjusted well !
For exemple when doing a book cover :
before, you could change the page width of the spine, and if there was a colored frame on it, its width would adjust too (but not the height if the height of the page didn't change)
Now, if you change the page width, the object is scaled (height and width) wich is absolutely counter productive : now you must manually rescale and…

  8. Would like a feature that would set type flush left to the longest centered line

I often need to set poetry extracts in books so that they are flush left to the longest centered line in the extract—see attached examples.

The workarounds a cumbersome and/or time consuming.

It would be great if there was a setting to do this automatically.

  9. Interface

To the "Paragraph Styles" Tab (and any other Tab that has something like a list, layers, links, etc.) allow the user to use different colors for every row (like the "Action" Tab in Photoshop), but something the user can choose. It would make more easy to identify some styles that you use more often or are more important.

  10. Highlighting and Differentiating Notes/Comments for various users

As a copy editor and proofreader, it would be fantastic if InCopy/InDesign had a highlighting feature. The swatch options are fine but not great when I am trying to print a book in black and white and someone forgets to remove the colors.

I, and the designer I work with, would love to have some way to differentiate between Notes/Comments for editors, other proofreaders, and designers. Right now, everyone has to read all the comments, which takes a substantial amount of time to look through. Thanks!

  11. Keyboard shortcut for inserting Unicode glyphs

Accessibility and other forms of automated publishing require the correct Unicode glyphs.

These glyphs include punctuation, math/science symbols, foreign language characters, and bullets/symbols. In 2000, Unicode became the default character set worldwide across the technology industries.

But we have no way to easily insert these glyphs into InDesign layouts. For example, if I need the math multiplication symbol rather than a lower case "x", I need to either scroll through the glyph dialogue box, or know beforehand the symbol's codepoint 2715 and type it into the Unicode field in the glyph dialogue box.

Too slow! Especially when you have to…

  13. Create index subentry structures with a drag-and-drop feature in the index window

It would be very useful if InDesign could convert the mouse pointer into a hand pointer when hovering over the index entries displayed in the index window so that the user can manually grab and move selected index entries under other entries—and thus create faster subentry structures.

  15. Fix (shorten!) the display of keyboard shortcuts in paragraph, character, and object style panels

In text style panels, there is a left column that shows keyboard shortcuts assigned to each style. See attached screenshot.

This column is waaaay too wide. Keyboard shortcuts are written out as "Shift+Cmd+Num 0" when they should instead be written as "⇧⌘Num0"—using the STANDARD system notation for modifier keys.

  17. Allow Optical Margin Alignment to apply only to punctuation.

Optical Margin Alignment does a great job allowing quotation marks and hyphens to hang into the column gutters, but it also make characters like A, W, and T do the same, which is often too high a price to pay. Fix this by allowing an option it to only apply it to punctuation.

  19. Export to Illustrator with Layer Preservation

We do a lot of packaging design for a large catalog of products and use InDesign for most of that design (due to some specific needs for variants, etc.). We often need to provide the files as .AI format to our manufacturing vendors. It's easy enough to export to PDF, which preserves the spot colors and Acrobat Layers, but when we save from PDF to .AI, the layers vanish. InDesign needs a way to save/export native files in a format that can be opened in Illustrator that preserves all InDesign layers.

  20. Make PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN keyboard keys maintain consistent position of page in the viewport

If I click the little Previous/Next Page buttons at bottom left of screen, I can cycle through pages, and the position of the page within the window stays the same throughout the process. This is great and very helpful when flipping through a book quickly.

But if hit PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN on the keyboard, it seems to SCROLL the document position up/down by some numerical value, with no regard to the position of the page being displayed.

It would be logical and helpful if PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN had exactly the same effect as the PREVIOUS/NEXT page…
