  3. Keyboard Shortcut for Adopting Paragraph Style Sheets

    1. Using the text tool, click in a paragraph.

    2. Hold Option & Shift, then click a Style Sheet formatted paragraph

    3. The paragraph that had the text tool in it is now formatted to the [Option/Shift] clicked paragraph's Style Sheet.

This is one of the most time saving keyboard shortcuts from Quark Xpress.

This saves countless hours for anyone formatting text, albeit a tri-fold, or a 1,000 page catalog.

PS: If you're going to mention Command/Return to bring up Style Sheets, this is not time saving. The user still has to scroll the curser around to select the Paragraph/Character Style Sheet, removing…

  4. Variables in formatting

Instead of using absolute values in formatting dialogues, let us define and use variables.

I often work in long documents and have dozens of styles. Using the leading for my body copy as a reference many other formatting options will use the same value or fractions or multiples of that value. Body copy might use 14 point leading with 7 points of space between paragraphs. Subheads might have an extra 7 points above. Main heads might use 21 point or 28 point leading. Bullets might use 14 points for the indent. If I need to change my leading I need…

  5. Stroke styles

Allow us to create and name custom Stroke Styles. These would be in addition to Object Styles.

Stroke Styles could be used to specify a custom underline, strikethrough, or paragraph rule. Stroke Styles could also be applied to paths and called by Object Styles.

  6. Custom stroke styles, that can be shared with Illustrator (and vice versa)

Stroke styles like those of Illustrator, where the library and styles can be created in either and shared between both programs

  7. Allow multiple character styles to be applied to characters

Allow multiple character styles to be applied to one character.
There should be an »appearance« panel as in Illustrator, which reflects the hierarchy of multiple applied character styles to one character/a text.

This would ease the work with XML and reduce the number of character styles needed. Nowadays you have to trick with GREP styles etc. to apply multiple character styles to one character.
With such a feature, I could define »italic« and »bold« and has no need to define »bold italic«. This will even end up in better HTML export: instead of <span class="BoldItalic">blabl</span> there could be the much…

  8. Integrate a Content :before and :after to Styles as it is possible in CSS

In the character and paragraph styles definition: Give us the opportunity of automatically add content before and after the text (give the opportunity to style this additionally with a character style), to which the style is applied. Currently a conent:before is only possible with using a paragraph style a trick (see image, sorry for the German ...).

Working with XML data or other equivalent text sources you can add media related text, that doesn't alter the content. This is quite important, if the content should be exported after production.

  9. Checkbox to exclude styles from output in »edit all export tags« panel

I'd love to exclude styles to be output into HTML, EPUB, etc. with a simple checkbox in the »edit all export tags« panel. Up to now, I have to delete styles that I don't want in the export every time before the export. The checkbox would save a lot of time with recurring work as journals etc.

  10. Add word and character spacing (justification) options to character styles

Allow the justification options within character styles.

Quite often I have different typefaces in one paragraph, which need individual values for the justification of word and/or character spacing. But I can only do the justification for a whole paragraph with exactly one font, ignoring all the other contained typefaces. This leads to word spaces, which are way too narrow or too wide in parts of a paragraph (see the top image). If I could adjust justification options in character styles as I can do in paragraph styles, the problem would be solved!

  11. Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style

I'd like the option to not add space between paragraphs of the same style, even if those paragraphs have space above or below. Microsoft Word has a checkbox that does this, and it's great for list styles. You can create a list style with space above and below and then check that box so that space only appears before and after the list, not between list items.

In order to achieve the same effect in InDesign, you need three or more styles (one with space above but not below for the first item, one without space above or below for…

  13. Make spellcheck apply to paragraph styles

It would be super useful to be able to run spellcheck only on certain paragraph styles. I run a directory that includes hundreds of names that get flagged, and if i I could run spellcheck just on body copy + headline paragraph styles, it would save me hours each month.

  14. Extended "apply next stlye" feature

I'm looking for a feature where you can force-apply the "next style".
tl;dr: Force the "apply next style" to existing and already style paragraphs.
For example: When you create a headline-style and define another stlye as following "next stlye" everything is fine as long as you enter your text in InDesign. But if you're working with a text that is already written you don't want to use the option "apply style and next stlye" with every single headline. I want it to be automated.
What I want is: A feature that forces any already styled paragraphes to apply the next…

  15. Custom Stroke Styles

inDesign has a number of Easter Eggs in the stroke styles: Woof, Rainbow, Rasta, Happy, and Lights. So obviously there is a way to create custom stroke styles, but it is locked and inaccessible. Please let us import our own vector objects into the stroke styles panel.

  16. Better Stroke Styles with Gap color

This is actually a crossover between objects and styles. When I do a custom striped stroke style with a gap color, the gap color peeks out behind the stroke. It appears both in InDesign and in the resulting PDF. That background color should not show.

  17. Dependent font sizes

Allow for Character styles to have a font size relative to the underlying Paragraph style by adding and subtracting (or even multiplication and division). A Character style’s font size could be -2 pt or +2 pt for example. If the Paragraph style’s font size is 14 pt, the Character style’s fonts size would result in 12 pt or 16 pt. This is very practical for optical adjustment of different typefaces for example, keeping everything dynamic.

  18. Excluding settings in (paragraph) styles

When editing a stylesheet i.e. for a paragraph I want to exclude the character colors. When checking -without color- there is also a override+ marking, which is not needed.
Can we have a checkbox to exclude some style settings or another solution?

  19. Improving Effects and Gradients for Objects

    1) Making Effects easier to copy/paste blending options like in Photoshop layers between several objects (similar to pasting blending to several objects)

    2) Also, improving precision and granularity of the rather smallish and sensitive gradient feather bar using mouse. When re-applying a gradient, it is difficult to slide existing gradient points without adversely affecting applied gradient to object, sometimes its easier to just restart a new one.

  20. Vignette effect for frames

    Hi guys,

This would be a killing feature. There's NO WAY to automatically assign a vignette effect to a photo frame. I order to do that I have to:

    1) Emulate the effect . by assigning inner shadow to a frame. This is kind of ok but it has probblems: it's not a propper vignette (vignettes actually affect corners, kind of a radial gradient) and there is no way to apply a size that is relative to the frame (I know, this is not even possible anywhere).

    2) On a picture, I can select the content of the frame (the…
