  1. Keyboard Shortcut for Adopting Paragraph Style Sheets

    1. Using the text tool, click in a paragraph.

    2. Hold Option & Shift, then click a Style Sheet formatted paragraph

    3. The paragraph that had the text tool in it is now formatted to the [Option/Shift] clicked paragraph's Style Sheet.

This is one of the most time saving keyboard shortcuts from Quark Xpress.

This saves countless hours for anyone formatting text, albeit a tri-fold, or a 1,000 page catalog.

PS: If you're going to mention Command/Return to bring up Style Sheets, this is not time saving. The user still has to scroll the curser around to select the Paragraph/Character Style Sheet, removing…

  2. sort styles alphabetically with optional case sensitivity

Allow the option to toggle case sensitivity on/off when sorting styles alphabetically, so that one can use case sensitivy to namespace styles.

For documents with a long list of styles, I namespace them so that styles used accross the document are sorted first, then those specific to a section, then those specific to an element of a section, like so:

    _body
    INTRO _body
    INTRO BOX _body

I name sections and subsections in upper case to easily distinguish, but it actually is the prefix "_" that gets sorting to lay the hierarchy.

It would be nice to just resort on case…

  3. Add option to "Find this style" just like "Find this colour"!

I would be great to have the ability to find a style (Paragraph, Character or Object) straight form the panels (Ctrl + click on a style) to quickly find obscure and unused styles without having to open the Find/Change panel.

This option is already available to find a colour in a document and it is very useful, so it would only be logical to do the same for styles, no?

It would be especially appreciated when one takes over a project that’s already been started... with styles galore!

  4. Paragraph Shading should have the option to rotate a gradient swatch

It is very important to allow the user to rotate the gradient in paragraph shading. I am sure it is child's play for you developers.
    Thanks.

In InDesign document I have italic and bold content for some words, but no paragraph style. I run the Auto Style feature in 2024 . It apply paragraphs style good, but my formatting Italic and bold was dropped out.

In the attached document for the word "intended" bold was applied, and Italic was applied for the word "combined" this formatting was dropped out.

I attached screen shot , before run Auto Styles and after run Auto styles. for your rference

  6. do not overwrite Object Styles when making a group to make it accessible

When applying different object styles to elements in InDesign, they are "deleted" when I make a group and giving the "group" another object-style (for example: a picture and a text, both have separate object styles - i group them, and then want to give the group an object style that puts it in the right position on my page)
As soon as I apply the Object style, to the group, the individual object styles are "overwritten". I can manually reapply them in the group, but thats not efficient.
Especialle to make an accessible PDF, the feature of different Object styles…

  7. To change the dictionary-language in paragraph styles for the whole document/all styles at once.

It would be great and timesaving to change the dictionary-language in paragraph styles for the whole document/all styles or selectedt styles at once. A checkbox like in effects "Global Light" would be great. "Global Language".

I had my styles mostly based on each other. But still have to change 4-6 Paragraphs for each language everey issue of a magazine.

  8. Allow for bullet numbers to display both left AND right

I am a script editor, and formatter. I'd like to be able to create script heading styles that are industry standard. This involves have the scene heading number (which can be styled as a bullet) both on the left AND right of the page. ie 'both' sides. Current we can only style them on the left (unless there's a way to do this I'm not aware of?).

  10. Have a character style option to lock to baseline grid / unlock from baseline grid

I typeset books and leading often have to adjust leading to accommodate page breaks, especially across a spread, so it is important to have this flexibility. I use alternative paragraph styles as a workaround, but this is clunky and time-consuming. Vertical justification doesn't always give the best result.

  11. Option to recognise different paragraph styles as the really part of the same style

When creating multi-level lists you need to use different paragraph styles. This creates a problem where the spacing you want at the end of the whole list and the start of a new paragraph is applied when you are in the middle of different levels of the list.
I am thinking a little checkbox next to the 'Based on' paragraph style section in the 'General' tab of the paragraph style settings window that allows you to link the new style as a child of the top-level style.
This way, those end of paragraph spacings won't be applied to the child…

  12. Add ability to export and import styles

It would be quite useful to be able to export and import styles in the same way that it's possible to do this to document colours. This would add a more consistent feel to the program, and make it easier to use. It would also eliminate having to send documents to get styles to someone else, saving a lot of time packaging, zipping, etc.

  13. Option to retain and set the object rotation angle with reference point within an object style for objects as well as anchored objects.

I use rotated objects in about 100% of all documents I create and I develop most to all of the document templates for all of our users which result in 4000+ documents every year. All the templates are heavily style based in all aspects and properties that can be set manually but are not covered by styles lead to confusion and lack of adoption by users. Scripting all the things that are not covered by native functionality in styles is one thing but leads to other problems. so please at least consider this as an easy target for improvement.

I would like to be able to bend the shading or transform it in some other way so that something like the one in the picture below can also arise.

It would be great if you could change the language in paragraph styles for the entire document, rather than for each style individually. Similar to the "global light" in the effects. So a checkbox "Change language in the whole document" or "Global language"!

  16. Allow placed Word Documents to map styles within folders

When placing a word document into indesign using the map styles feature, inDesign will only automatically map to existing styles in the document if they are in the root folder of the styles pane. If styles are in subfolders new styles of the same name are created in the root and I manually have to remove them and relink to the existing ones.

This is a nightmare when you have a lot of styles to map, as you end up with a messy styles pallette - i'd love to create subfolders for list / headings / footer styles etc :)

  17. There should be a possibility to kern just one char using Character styles.

There should be an option to kern just one character using Character styles. At present there are only 3 option in Character style window.

  20. view style dependencies

This has already been suggested but I would like to add.
The problem with viewing style dependencies using the twirling arrows is that the styles might well be in different groups.
Could we get an option to open (and maybe print) a panel with the style dependencies listed?
See the F11 panel in LibreOffice for an idea.
