Content aware fitting should not apply to placed images in a document
'Content aware fitting' conflicts with checkbox 'autofill'-preference in application-bar.
I assumed content aware fitting would only apply on newly placed images.
When I want to relink an earlier placed image with content aware fitting 'ON' the relinked image is auto fitted in a way I don't want.
The mention check-box would be ideal to let InDesign know I don't want to fit contant aware after the initial placing of content.9 votes -
Indicator to show that there are locked objects on the page.
There should be a small red lock-symbol somewhere to show, that there are locked objects on the page. It sometime happens, that I want to select and copy all objectrs to a new page or document and locked objects are missing there.

Text Styles in Properties Panel - Show Overrides, Clear Overrides
The properties panel in the October 2018 version of InDesign is a great feature, however the implementation of Styles in the Text Insertion mode provides no feedback on whether or not overrides exist in the selected text, nor does it provide a means to clear any overrides. This provides a significant stumbling block for new users, who may end up redefining styles and applying more overrides to their text trying to fix display issues, not realising that the problem is overrides.
Building out the functionality to better reflect the existing Styles panels - at least in regards to locating and…

Remove (or give option to remove) font information from Contextual Properties style dropdown
The font name/weight/size information now included in the properties dropdown adds a lot of visual clutter without being particularly useful for finding desired styles.
For example, in a typical document I have multiple styles that all use the same font name/weight/size, but differ greatly in other settings-- some are bullets, some have an inset, some have specific nested styles, etc etc. THAT'S what's important about them, not the fact that they share a font name/weight/size.
In addition, because the style name and the style attributes are shown in the same font size/weight in the menu, it's harder to scan down…

Autocomplete style names typed into styles dropdown in properties window
The new contextual properties window would be much handier if the dropdown window had an autocomplete ability similar to what's currently available in the Quick Apply window. The current implementation doesn't save any time, as you still have to navigate through the various options to find the one you want-- something I find more challenging to do thanks to the additional clutter of the font name/weight/point size being included in the dropdown.

Groups, Smart Groups, and Searching in Links Panel
The links panel should support Groups and Smart Groups. Large numbers of links in projects -- especially those that include a lot of InCopy assignments -- get unwieldy.
Ideally you would be able to make groups and manually move links into them, and also create smart groups that would automatically update. Ideas for common filters that smart groups would be used for:
All CMKY images, all non-CMYK images, all InCopy links, all links that need to be updated, all links that are embedded or not, all links that are currently on a Hidden Layer or hidden via conditional text, etc.

Make PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN keyboard keys maintain consistent position of page in the viewport
If I click the little Previous/Next Page buttons at bottom left of screen, I can cycle through pages, and the position of the page within the window stays the same throughout the process. This is great and very helpful when flipping through a book quickly.
But if hit PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN on the keyboard, it seems to SCROLL the document position up/down by some numerical value, with no regard to the position of the page being displayed.
It would be logical and helpful if PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN had exactly the same effect as the PREVIOUS/NEXT page…

Add Custom Commands with Custom Shortcuts to Keyboard Shortcuts Menu
There are certain actions that I'd like to create shortcuts for, but the commands for them aren't listed in the Keyboard Shortcut Menus. For example, setting a keyboard shortcut for the various aligning objects. Aligning text is an option, though. Not what I need.
Everyone's workflow is different. There are commands that I'll just never use. So, freeing up individuals with the ability to create custom commands, which can be suited to their unique workflow would immensely help individual/company productivity. Custom workspaces exist, custom keyboard shortcut sets exist, let's have custom commands too!

Show Ink Manager settings in the Swatches panel
Show Ink Manager settings in the Swatches panel
Whenever we use Ink Manager to convert spot colors to process colors (1) or define one spot color as alias for another (2), this should be visualized in the Swatches panel so whoever edits the INDD can immediately spot (ha!) that changes have been made and fix them if needed (instead of shedding tears over inexplicable output results).
(1) Replace the spot icon by a “ink-managed” process icon that can be distinguished from the “native” process icon.
(2) Replace the spot icon by the alias icon from the Ink Manager dialog.

CC Library Keyboard Shortcuts, or TextExpander feature
CC Libraries exist to make it fast to add pre-built content to an INDD. Text does not have a quick way of placing inline - you must right click and click place content. Annoying when doing hundreds of times.
Two solutions:
1. Right clicking on a library element should have "keyboard shortcut" adjacent "rename". When a keyboard shortcut is added, show that shortcut on the right side of the element in the CC Library panel.
2. Add 'text expander' feature. Right click on a text library element and have option for 'expand text on...' where a unique phrase can be…5 votes -
Workspace Default Setting
Every time I open inDesign, it resets to the "Essentials" workspace, and I have to select my saved workspace. It would be nice to be able to set a Default Workspace so it will open every time in the one I need.

Annoying dialogs, option to “don’t show again”...
Is there some universal way to turn off unnecessary dialogs?
For example when I click to publish a document for online, I get an annoying dialog that says "Are you sure you want to update..." (see attached).
Why is this dialog necessary? I can just re-publish if there was some mistake. It just slows things down. Some dialogs like this do have a "don't show me this again" option, but not here... why?
In general, I find the plethora of "Do you really want to..." dialogs disruptive and unnecessary. Except for something critical, or something you can't undo, why do…

Simplify hyperlink process
I've been using Indesign for over a decade but still can't fully understand the hyperlinking process. For example, what is the difference between New hyperlink destination and New hyperlink? (I've read about the difference but still find it kludgy.) What couldn't the process be as simple as when defining a paragraph/character/object style sheet in ID? Why can't I add simple page links to text (sometimes it works, other times it doesn't). Why does the hyperlink panel only provide a URL shortcut and not a simple Go to page #? And why can't I rename previously used hyperlinks by simply double…

Colour picker can't interperet hex values preceded by a hash
If a hexadecimal value is pasted into the hex field in the colour picker with a hash (#) on the front of the value, the picker should be able to ingest it. Currently the hash must be manually removed before the picker will update.
Very minor but very annoying when copying values from other software that includes the hash.

Allow key bindings, shorcuts and function changes for mice
Similar yet from different worlds, AutoCAD is easy to navigate a layout by zooming in and out with the mouse wheel to where the curser is pointed, as well as to pan by clicking and holding the middle mouse button. Is there a way to do this already? However, it seems that InDesign only allows binding of Keyboard shortcuts. Mouse-bindings can further reduce stress and fatigue when working on documents for extended periods of (Coming from a Civil Drafter of 7yrs). It can also improve the speed of work completed by allowing the user to more fully tailor the InDesign…

pop-up change page of a linked pdf/indd file
please add simple pop-up option (like object layers) to change the showing page of a link (which is either pdf or indesign file). when my link is for example a pdf containing multiple pages, it's unnecessarily complicated to change the showing page to some another.
so please – right click > pop-up window > change page of link6 votes
