More control with paragraph shading
I would like more control over the space insets in the paragraph shading options. When a long paragraph of text flow on to the next page there is no way to control the spacing above (padding) when we're in the middle of the paragraph and "clip to frame" is checked. It is possible to get away with it if the distance from the top-margin and the first baseline is sufficient, but most of the time I want more space. I think it would be better if the text was forced down to the second baseline if necessary. The end goal…

edit text variable directly
Rather than having to dig down through menus to edit a variable, have it editable directly from the RMB contextual menu in the layout.

Spellcheck only "real" copy.
Add an option in "Check Spelling" to tell it to "ignore automatically generated placeholder text". So that Spellcheck would flag only real copy. I often use both in my documents and it's hard to check a 40-pg document when it keeps stopping at several paragraphs of placeholder text.

Symbol for automatic hyphen in Find/Change
It would be great, if we could search for words, that are hyphenated automatically at a specific position (I do not mean discretionary hyphens, but those, created automatically from InDesign’s hyphenation module). Therefore a special search character would be useful.

Font stack for missing glyphs
Not every base text font has all the glyphs I sometimes need -- some need only a few math or Greek symbols, others need Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Hebrew, or even Devanagari. Currently I manually hunt and pick them from the closest alternative, selecting glyphs from a font CLOSE ENOUGH right down to the ever-reliable fallbacks of Times New Roman and Arial Unicode MS. It would help if I could define a custom font stack per "base font": a list of alternatives in a Preferred Order, which would each in turn be scanned for missing glyphs. Kind of (well, exactly like)…

Dictionaries
Please, simplify already the installation of dictionaries based on Hunspell! It's not that complicated ...! but it is so useful!

GREP query to remove whitespace before sentence
Along with a query for removing trailing whitespace, one is needed for preceding whitespace. The workaround of searching for ^p+space does not work in all instances, especially in tables.

Delete unused-variables
Unfortunately the UI- and the Handling of variables is quiet different to all other menues and function in InDesign. And so theres still no way to delete "unused" variables.
While handling an document over several years - e.g. a typical product-catalog or price list - the variables-list grows from year to year as there are every year new products which need a variable. After some years it is not practical to have a list with 500 variables but only 100 are used.
It would be very appreciated if the complete handling of variables could be like in all other menues.4 votes -
Create a more functional font menu please!
Make the fonts menu more functional.
Show larger font samples
Let user see selected text or custom text as sample text (instead of just using "sample")
Ability to sort between serif, san-serif, decorative, handwritten, etc. Even if this means user needs to create "tags" to organize their own font libraries.See the typekit website or any website that sells fonts. Do it like that.
10 votesThe above functionality apart from having a different Sample text for font is now available in the latest version of InDesign i.e. InDesign CC 2018

Add Mini-glyph panel and OpenType adornment in World Ready composer.
Add Mini-glyph panel and OpenType adornment in World Ready composer. There is no raison that we can't use this features on Hebrew or Arabic. For me (and others) OpenType features in Hebrew fobts (glyphs alternates, Justification Alternates, stylic sets, etc...) And for me (and other) are much more needed in Hebrew that in Latin.

I'd like a feature like the Format Painter in MS Word.
I inherited a ton of files from someone who apparently did not like to set up styles. If an edit comes in, and, for example, I have to add a new subhead, I have to go back and look at all the formatting of the subheads to create a new one, then make all those same choices, since there's no style sheet created. Would be great to just click on one of the existing subheads, click on a format painter icon, and click on the new type for the new type to take on the format of the existing type.…

Add a "Dropword" feature
A “dropword” is like a drop cap, but instead of making one or more characters large, it makes a space for the letter or word, but leaves the word a normal size:

Provide 'Indent to here' (~/^i) as a 'Text After' option in the Bullets and Numbering dialog
The ability to add 'Indent to here' as an option in 'Text After' bullets or numbering in the dialog box would be a time-saver so it's automatically inserted after them, rather than having to Grep it or do it to the necessary lines, individually.

Turn on/off show spell check in PREVIEW or other screen modes. Not just NORMAL
When switching between NORMAL screen Mode to PREVIEW mode I still want any spelling errors to show. This would be great in any screen mode with some kind of a toggle button. In fact, the ability to show various hidden paragraph and character formatting would be brilliant.

Glossary
Microsoft Word had a really neat Glossary entry feature which allowed you to store your most commonly used words/phrases, and call them up with a key command. I have dumped Word in favor of using InDesign for all my word processing, since I can have style sheets and do everything else I want inside this wonderful program…except glossary feature. I don't know if that would add too much clutter to InDesign, which I wouldn't like, but if it could be added on, wow, would that be a powerful feature.
