Adobe InDesign Wishlist

We don’t work for Adobe, but we think if enough people raise their voice that Adobe will listen. What kinds of features do you want to see in future versions of InDesign? Are there current features that you wish worked differently?

(This is not the place for bug reports or flaming. Constructive ideas only please!)

INSTRUCTIONS: Type your idea in the field below. If it’s similar to someone else’s idea, you can add your vote to theirs. If it’s a new idea, click Share a New Idea and fill out the form. You can log in with your email address, Facebook, or LinkedIn address. VOTING: You have 25 votes to spread around. You’ll get votes back when a feature is completed (or you can manually remove your vote from a feature).

  1. Drop words

Creates drop word effect to all paragraphs with selected paragraph style. The number of drop lines is user defined, and "window" (space) below the word.
    Example:

THIS is the Drop word function, i think
its cool idea to add it to Indesign
and I think that almost Indesign users say
    to 10x about it.

    • Free design for the Footnotes rule

MS-Word allow free design for the footnotes line, like a paragraph design. In Indesign, if we want take caption or designed glyphs for the foontones role - we can't do it.

          • Endnotes option (like Footnotes)

Endnotes are a pain! Need a Footnotes-style feature to ease EPUB production without messing around with scripts etc. Also need an option to switch between Endnotes and Footnotes.

                  • Custom stroke ends and stroke styles

To be able to define custom stroke ends. There are just a few, but they are very simplistic. I'd like to be able to add my own, and to specify what percentage they are applied at (like in Illustrator). I'd also like to define my own custom-stroke styles, besides just the standard dot, stripe, and dash. It would be sort of like custom strokes in AI. I know there's a way to do it (because of easter egg stroke styles) but there is no UI built into InDesign to access these features.

                    • Table Cells to Split Across frames/pages/spreads

If a table cell is too long it won't split over a frame, it would be neat if this happened without having to split cells manually.

                      • "Action"-Panel to record and play actions

Photoshop has an "action" panel to record and playback certain actions (above all actions which often repeat). This would be a reaaaaalllly cool feature for people who ain't into scripting. This could help to setup and speed-up workflows with an easy-to-use tool.

                        • Live preview for EPUB export

Just like you can now preview SWF export in the Preview panel, I'd like a preview panel for EPUB export. Essentially, it would build a better version of the buggy Adobe Digital Editions into InDesign so I wouldn't have to go back and forth.

                              • Less clunky gradient coloring

In photoshop coloring gradients is easy and natural. In indesign it's so clunky, it takes many more clicks, it's hard to figure out how to define opacity for each color, and it's too easy to accidentally remove the gradient, or replace it to the default, plus the option to save your gradient to swatches should be available from the gradient flyout, or as a save button on the panel.

                                • would have objectstyles with widths and heights for objects

for example have all the frames with objectstyle "catalog-image" change to 30x40mm in your document by changing an objectstyle:frameoption to width 30, height 40mm.

                                  • Contextual paragraph styles

I want not to have to make multiple nearly-identical paragraph styles with minor variations, and I want not have to go back and reapply them every time text reflows.

Example: If I have a different paragraph style if the text falls at the top of a column-- let's say it gets a RULE ABOVE that the rest of the text doesn't get--I want either to be able to toggle between the two styles automatically OR to have a toggle within the paragraph style that says "Use this RULE ABOVE if and only if at top of column."

                                      • Different paragraph spacing depending on next paragraph style.

In the paragraph style you had the option to not add space between paragraphs of the same style like Word. Or to control spacing depending on the following style. ie when creating a bulleted list – different spacing between each point and between the list and the surrounding paragraphs.

                                        • The ability to select non-contiguous text, like you can in Word.

In Word you can select multiple areas of text that are not next to each other. Would be nice to be able to do this in InDesign.
